Case IH 3261 – Engine Controller: Engine Controller Starter Relay Circuit Low Side Driver - Short Circuit To Battery Of Excess Temperature

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU/EDC) has detected a short to the battery or an over-temperature condition on the low-side driver circuit that controls the starter relay.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • Steiger T4B
  • Steiger
  • Magnum
  • Maxxum
  • SSL (Skid Steer Loaders)
  • CTL (Compact Track Loaders)
  • Axial-Flow Combines
  • Cotton Express Pickers

Check the cause

  1. Monitor for intermittency: If the code clears and does not return, it may have been a temporary over-temperature spike in the power stage

  2. Inspect the starter relay and the wiring harness between the Engine Controller and the starter relay for a short circuit to the battery on the low-side control circuit

  3. Verify the Engine Controller module: If the wiring harness and relay test fine, the fault indicates an internal hardware failure (ADC failure or burnt power stage) within the Engine Controller itself

Repair steps

  1. Test and Replace Relay/Wiring

Locate the starter relay. Test the relay and the low-side driver wire running back to the Engine Controller for a short to battery voltage. Repair any chafed wiring or replace a shorted relay.

  2. Replace the Engine Controller

If the fault code persists after verifying the integrity of the circuit, the official repair procedure dictates that you must replace the Engine Controller.

  3. Reprogram the New Module

After replacing the Engine Controller, you must connect the appropriate electronic service tool (EST) to reload the engine dataset and restore the machine's self-learning parameters.
