Case IH 3262 (DTC 7C22) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller (EDC): Starter relay low side driver circuit short to ground failure
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) actively monitors the K-062 starter control relay low side control circuit. If the ECU detects a short to ground condition in this specific circuit, it will log fault code 3262 / 7C22 and may prevent the engine from starting or limit functionality.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- Magnum 235-340 (Series 4)
- Steiger series
- Puma series
- Case 580 Super N backhoes
- compact track loaders
- skid steers
Check the cause
Test the starter control relay (K-062) coil resistance for an internal short
Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU (A-095) and the K-062 relay socket for a short circuit to ground
Disconnect the harness at the ECU and check for continuity to ground on the starter relay control pin to identify chafed or shorted wiring
Check for an internal ECU failure (burnt internal driver) if the relay and wiring test fine
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental shorts or ECU damage.
Locate the Relays
Access the main fuse/relay panel (location varies by cab/model, often in the roof panel or side console). Identify relay K-062 (Starter Control) and K-005 (Starter Motor ON relay).
Inspect and Swap
Pull the K-062 relay. Inspect the socket terminals for corrosion, melting, or pushed-out pins. You can temporarily swap this relay with an identical non-critical relay (like a work light relay) to see if the fault clears.
Trace the Harness
If the relay is not the issue, use a multimeter to measure the resistance between the low-side control terminal in the relay socket and chassis ground. If it reads continuity (0 ohms) when it shouldn't, trace the wire back to the ECU, looking for pinch points, rubbed insulation, or melted loom.
Repair Wiring
Splice and heat-shrink any damaged sections of the wire harness.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reinstall the relays, reconnect the battery, and turn the key to the ON position. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the machine's diagnostic display to clear the inactive fault code.
Test
Attempt to start the engine. If the code immediately returns and the wiring is 100% verified, the ECU's internal low-side driver is likely burnt out, requiring ECU replacement or repair.
