Case IH 3263 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) A-095: CAN C Bus off failure.
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is capable of connecting to and communicating on three separate Controller Area Networks (CAN). The CAN Node C Bus serves as the main engine interface bus. The ECU provides an internal CAN termination resistor for the CAN Node C Bus and monitors the network. This fault code triggers when the ECU detects a complete communication failure ("bus off" state) on the CAN C network.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- Steiger T4B
- 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
- 7240
- 8240
- 9240
- Puma Series Tractors
- A8000 Series Sugar Cane Harvesters
- A8800 Series Sugar Cane Harvesters
Check the cause
Check if the machine's battery has been connected to an external power supply (e.g., a jump starter or external charger), which can disrupt CAN voltages.
Verify that the machine's charging system and battery voltage are operating within normal parameters.
Inspect the CAN C Bus wire harness for shorts, open circuits, or damaged twisted-pair wires.
Check related transmission/clutch solenoids (if applicable to the specific model's drivetrain) for proper resistance (8 - 11 Ohms).
Evaluate the Central Control Unit (CCU) and ECU A-095 for internal hardware or software faults.
Repair steps
Disconnect External Power
If an external power supply is currently connected to the tractor/combine, disconnect it immediately and test the system for normal operation.
Test Battery/Charging System
Ensure the battery voltage is correct. If the voltage is out of spec, repair the charging system first.
Test Solenoids
If battery voltage is okay, test the resistance of the clutch solenoids. If the resistance is not between 8 - 11 Ohms, remove and replace the faulty solenoid.
Inspect and Repair Wiring
Trace the CAN C Bus wiring harness. Repair any damaged wires or connectors causing a short or open circuit on the network.
Software Flash
If the wiring and power supply are intact, the issue may be a software fault within the ECU A-095. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check the fault status and re-flash the ECU A-095 with the appropriate software if necessary.
Replace ECU
If the ECU A-095 cannot be re-flashed, or if the internal CAN termination resistor/power stage has failed, remove and replace the ECU A-095.
