Case IH 3278 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): ECM Internal Supply Voltage Too High - CJ940 Above Limit

Issue description

The "CJ940" refers to an internal power supply component/circuit within the engine's electronic control unit. This code is triggered when the voltage supplied to (or regulated by) this internal component exceeds its maximum allowable upper limit, indicating either an external overvoltage event or an internal hardware failure within the module.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage to ensure the correct baseline voltage and verify batteries are not wired incorrectly (e.g., 24V jump-start on a 12V system)

  2. Test alternator output to verify the voltage regulator has not failed, as an overcharging alternator can send voltage spikes to the ECM

  3. Inspect the engine wiring harness and the main power supply pins at the ECM connectors for shorts to a higher voltage power source

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery negative terminal.

  2. Inspect wiring harness

Perform a visual and multimeter inspection of the wiring harness leading to the ECM. Test the power supply pins for shorts to power.

  3. Test alternator charging voltage

Reconnect the battery and test the alternator charging voltage while the engine is running (if the tractor still starts) to rule out an overcharging alternator.

  4. Diagnose ECM failure

If the battery voltage is normal, the alternator is not overcharging, and the wiring harness has no faults, the CNH diagnostic manual states the issue is an internal defect within the EDC/ECM. The internal CJ940 component is not serviceable.

  5. Remove defective ECM

Remove the defective ECM from the engine block (it is typically mounted with rubber vibration isolators and a cooling plate).

  6. Install replacement ECM

    Install a replacement ECM.

  7. Program new ECM

The new ECM will be blank or locked. It must be programmed/flashed with the correct engine software (dataset) for your specific tractor model using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) by an authorized dealer.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) Unit

Look up specific ECM in the Case IH parts catalog under Category 04 - Electrical Systems, Diagram 04-04 using the machine's PIN/serial number. Must be dealer-programmed to match the tractor's specific engine configuration, CAN-bus architecture, and immobilizer system. Do not buy a used ECM from a different tractor model.
