Case IH 3281 (DTC E72D) - ECU – ECU (A-095): 12V sensor supply 1 voltage is too low
Issue description
The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) monitors the 12V sensor supplies. If the ECU determines that the voltage for sensor supply 1 has dropped below the acceptable threshold, it triggers this fault. The specific circuit associated with this 12V supply is routed through pin 84 in connector X-917.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Puma Series (130-240)
- Magnum Series (235-340 Series 4)
- Optum Series (270, 300 CVX)
- Axial-Flow Combines (240 Series, 7230, 8230, 9230)
Check the cause
Check for concurrent codes. If no other error code is present, proceed to the next step.
Ensure that the tractor's battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump starter or external charger). If an external supply is connected, disconnect it and test the system for normal operation.
Verify that the machine's base battery voltage is healthy and within normal operating range.
Check the resistance on both the medium range clutch solenoid and the low range clutch solenoid. Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 on each solenoid. The resistance must be between 8 and 11 Ohms.
Repair steps
Isolate the Power Supply
Disconnect any external power sources and verify the machine's battery is fully charged and holding proper voltage.
Inspect Connector X-917
Locate the engine plug connector X-917. Inspect pin 84, which is the dedicated pin for the 12V sensor supply 1. Check for pushed pins, corrosion, or a short to ground in the wiring harness.
Test and Replace Solenoids
Using a multimeter, test the low range and medium range clutch solenoids. If the resistance on either solenoid is outside the 8 - 11 Ohms specification, remove and replace the faulty solenoid, as an internally shorted solenoid will pull the 12V supply voltage down.
ECU Replacement
If the wiring harness is intact, no shorts are found, and the solenoids test within specification, the A-095 ECU has likely suffered an internal failure on the 5V/12V sensor supply rail. The ECU will need to be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
