Case IH 3282 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / EDC): Timeout of CAN Message WSI (Wheel Speed Info)

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is expecting to receive a continuous data message containing the tractor's wheel speed over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. This data is typically broadcast by the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Vehicle Control Unit. When the ECU does not receive this specific message within the programmed time limit, it logs a timeout error.

   Check for Companion Codes: Check the transmission controller for related faults (e.g., TRANS 77). Multiple CAN timeout codes indicate a severed CAN bus wire, while a single sensor code points to the sensor itself.

   Inspect the Wheel Speed Sensor: Locate the wheel speed sensor on the transmission housing or axle. Inspect the sensor head, 3-pin connector, and wiring harness for physical damage, mud/debris intrusion, or corrosion.

   Test the CAN Bus: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN backbone should read approximately 60 ohms.

   Verify TCU Communication: Ensure the Transmission Control Unit is online and communicating with your diagnostic tool. If offline, the Engine ECU will lose the WSI message.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the CAN modules.

   Clean and Re-seat Connections

   Disconnect the wheel speed sensor harness. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner. Check for pushed-out pins or frayed wires near the connector base. Reconnect and ensure the locking tab clicks.

   Replace the Sensor (If Faulty)

   If diagnostics point to a failed sensor (or if a TRANS 77 code is present), unscrew the wheel speed sensor from the transmission/axle housing. Install the new sensor. Note: Some sensors require specific thread-depth adjustment; refer to your specific model's service manual for the air-gap specification if it is not a fixed-depth sensor.

   Repair CAN Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the sensor is functional but the CAN message is still timing out, trace the CAN wiring harness between the TCU and the Engine ECU. Repair any chafed, broken, or corroded wires using weather-sealed butt connectors.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic tool to clear the engine and transmission fault codes. Test drive the tractor to verify that the speedometer registers on the dashboard and that code 3282 does not return.
