Case IH 3283 (DTC E32D) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU A-095): ECU internal failure - Sensor 5 volt supply 2

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) provides three independent 5.0 V voltage supplies for various sensors. These voltages are continuously monitored by internal hardware within the ECU to ensure they remain within a specified operating range. This fault code is triggered when the reference voltage for "sensor supply 2" falls out of the acceptable range.

Check the cause

  1. Verify if an external power supply is currently connected to the machine

  2. Check the battery voltage on the instrument cluster by starting the engine and running it at 2000 rev/min

  3. Inspect the charging system for faults (e.g., overcharging or undercharging)

  4. Check the machine's wire harness for shorts to ground or shorts to power

  5. Inspect solenoids on the 5V reference circuit for internal shorts

  6. Verify the integrity of the Central Control Unit (CCU) or Universal Control Module (UCM)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect any external power supplies connected to the tractor or combine.

    If the code clears, the external supply was causing a voltage irregularity.

  2. Start the engine and monitor the system voltage at 2000 RPM.

    If the charging system is faulty, repair or replace the alternator/voltage regulator.

  3. Disconnect the sensors operating on the ECU A-095 "5 volt supply 2" circuit one by one.

    If the 5V reference voltage returns to normal (and the active code changes to a sensor open circuit code), the disconnected sensor is shorted internally and must be replaced.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ECU A-095 to the sensors.

    Look for chafed wires, corrosion in the connectors, or bent pins. Repair any damaged wiring.

  5. Replace the Engine Control Unit (ECU A-095).

    If the wiring harness, charging system, and all sensors on the circuit test good, the fault lies within the ECU A-095 hardware itself. The Engine Control Unit will need to be replaced and reprogrammed by a certified Case IH dealer.
