Case IH 3284 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: Sensor Supply Voltage 2 - Low

Issue description

This fault indicates that the 5-volt reference circuit #2 has dropped below the acceptable voltage threshold. A 'Low' voltage condition almost always means there is a short to ground pulling the voltage down. This is typically caused by an internally shorted sensor on that specific circuit, a chafed wiring harness shorting to the chassis, or an internal failure within the ECU.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the machine has sufficient battery voltage, as insufficient system voltage can occasionally trigger reference voltage faults.

  2. Perform a sensor isolation drop test to determine if a sensor is pulling the circuit down.

  3. Inspect the engine wiring harness for obvious signs of rubbing, melting, or pinching against the engine block or frame.

  4. Check the EDC/ECM connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

Repair steps

  1. Monitor the Circuit

    Turn the key to the ON position (engine OFF). Connect your diagnostic tool (CNH EST) to monitor the active 3284 fault code, or use a multimeter to probe the 5V reference pin at one of the sensors on the Supply 2 circuit.

  2. Disconnect Sensors

    Unplug the sensors on the Sensor Supply 2 circuit one at a time.

  3. Check for Voltage Return

    After unplugging a sensor, check if the 5V reference returns to the harness (or if the active 3284 code changes to an inactive state / changes to a 'High' voltage code).

  4. Replace Shorted Sensor

    If unplugging a specific sensor restores the 5-volt supply, that sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  5. Test the Harness

    If all sensors on the circuit are unplugged and the voltage is still low, use a multimeter to test the 5V reference wire for continuity to ground. If there is continuity, locate and repair the short in the wiring harness.

  6. Replace the EDC

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly (no shorts to ground) and all sensors are unplugged, but the EDC still fails to output the 5V reference, the EDC has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  7. Verify Repair

    Clear the fault codes, run the engine, and verify the code does not return.
