Case IH 3285 (F-3511-12) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Regulated 5 Volt Sensor Supply #3 - Too High

Issue description

The engine controller is detecting that the 5-volt reference circuit #3 is outputting a voltage outside the expected parameters, commonly caused by a short circuit to a high voltage source, a shorted sensor, or an internal hardware failure within the engine controller.

Check the cause

  1. Check overall battery voltage to ensure it is sufficient, as low or surging system voltage can cause erratic ECU behavior

  2. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the EDC to the sensors on the 5V supply #3 circuit for chafing, melting, or pinched wires that could cause a short to a 12V power source or ground

  3. Identify which sensors share the #3 5V supply (commonly pressure or temperature sensors) and check them for internal faults

  4. Inspect the 60-pin or 94-pin connectors at the Engine Controller (specifically pins A29, K17, or K18 on F5C engines) for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn the key switch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Isolate the Circuit

    Disconnect the engine wiring harness from all sensors operating on the 5-volt supply #3 circuit.

  3. Test Voltage

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition ON (engine off), and use a multimeter to measure the voltage at the sensor connectors. It should read a steady 5 volts.

  4. Sensor Isolation

    If the voltage reads a steady 5V with the sensors unplugged, plug the sensors back in one at a time. If plugging in a specific sensor causes the voltage to spike or drop out of range, that sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  5. Harness Repair

    If the voltage is out of range even with all sensors unplugged, test the wiring harness for continuity to the battery positive terminal. If a short is found, repair or replace the damaged section of the engine wiring harness.

  6. ECU Replacement

    If the wiring harness is perfectly intact and no sensors are shorted, the fault lies within the Engine Controller's internal power stage. You must replace the ECU.

  7. Reprogramming

    If the EDC/ECU is replaced, you must use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to reload the engine dataset and perform the appropriate service tool procedure to restore the engine's self-learning parameters.
