Case IH 3290 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: Turbo Compound Monitoring - Signal Not Plausible
Issue description
The control module is receiving data from the turbo compound monitoring sensor (typically monitoring turbine speed) that does not logically align with the current operating conditions of the engine (such as engine RPM, load, and boost pressure). This usually points to a failing sensor, a wiring issue distorting the signal, or a mechanical slippage/failure within the hydrodynamic coupling or reduction gears.

Check the cause
Check for related electrical codes (e.g., 3287, 3288, 3289, or 3280-3286) using the EASy diagnostic tool to rule out hard electrical failures.
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector from the turbo compound sensor to the ECM for chafing, exhaust heat damage, or corrosion.
Run the engine and monitor the turbo compound speed sensor via live data, looking for erratic drop-outs or spikes compared to engine RPM.
Inspect the turbo compound unit mechanically for external fluid leaks around the hydrodynamic coupling and listen for abnormal gear noise.
Repair steps
Disconnect and Clean
Disconnect the turbo compound sensor. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and check for pushed-back pins. Reconnect and test to see if the code clears.
Circuit Testing
If the code persists, disconnect the sensor and the ECM harness. Use a multimeter to perform a continuity and resistance check on the signal, ground, and 5V reference wires. Repair any open circuits or shorts to ground/power.
Sensor Replacement
If the wiring tests good but the live data signal remains erratic or implausible, replace the turbo compound monitoring sensor.
Mechanical Verification
If a new sensor does not resolve the 3290 code, the issue is likely mechanical. The hydrodynamic coupling or reduction gears connecting the power turbine to the crankshaft may be slipping or damaged, causing the turbine speed to fall out of the plausible range. The turbo compound unit may need to be removed and overhauled or replaced.
Clear and Verify
After repairs, clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool. Run the machine under a heavy load to ensure the turbo compound system engages properly and the code does not return.
