Case IH 3291 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: Cylinder 1 Specific Errors - No Signal
Issue description
The engine control module is not receiving a valid electrical signal from the Cylinder 1 fuel injector solenoid valve. This typically points to an open circuit, a disconnected plug, a severed wire, or a complete internal failure of the injector's electrical solenoid.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Cylinder 1 fuel injector for chafed wires, melted insulation, or disconnected plugs.
Disconnect the Cylinder 1 injector harness and check the pins for corrosion, pushed-back terminals, or moisture.
Using a multimeter, check the resistance across the Cylinder 1 injector solenoid pins (an open circuit or infinite resistance confirms a dead injector solenoid).
Check the continuity of the wiring from the injector connector back to the ECM pins (e.g., Pins 16 and 32) to ensure there is no break in the harness.
Repair steps
Preparation
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts. Clean the area around the valve cover and fuel rail to prevent dirt from entering the engine.
Access the Injector
Remove the engine covers and, if necessary, the valve cover to access the Cylinder 1 fuel injector.
Disconnect Lines
Disconnect the electrical connector from the Cylinder 1 injector. Carefully loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the injector. Note: Cap the rail and injector ports immediately to prevent contamination.
Remove the Injector
Remove the injector hold-down clamp or fastening screws. Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.
Clean the Bore
Thoroughly clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no old copper washers or debris are left behind.
Install New Injector
Place a new copper sealing washer (grommet) on the new injector. Insert the injector into the bore.
Reassembly
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the fastening screws to the manufacturer's specified torque setting. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and torque to spec.
Reconnect
Plug in the electrical connector and reconnect the battery.
Calibration
For modern common-rail engines, use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to enter the new injector's IMA (Injector Menge Abgleichung / Injector Quantity Adjustment) code into the ECM. This code is stamped on the top of the new injector.
Test
Prime the fuel system, start the engine, check for leaks, and use the diagnostic tool to clear fault code 3291.

Injector Sealing Washer / Grommet
Generic part; must be replaced when installing a new injector.
High-Pressure Fuel Line
Generic part; highly recommended to replace the specific cylinder's line once loosened on common rail systems to ensure a proper seal.
