Case IH 3293 – Engine ECU: Cylinder 1 BIP Search Failure - Too Many Unsuccessful Searched

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) attempted to detect the electrical signature (Beginning of Injection Period) on the Cylinder 1 injector multiple times but failed. This typically points to a mechanical response fault within the Cylinder 1 injector itself, an electrical circuit issue preventing the signal from returning, or a fuel system issue where the rail pressure is significantly lower than the commanded target.

Check the cause

  1. Check for a clogged fuel filter or restrictions in the low-pressure pump hydraulic circuit.

  2. Inspect the high-pressure fuel rail, lines, and connections for any signs of leakage or pressure loss.

  3. Verify that the high-pressure fuel pump is operating efficiently and meeting commanded rail pressure targets.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors specifically for the Cylinder 1 injector. Look for shorts to ground, shorts to a high source, or open circuits.

  5. Use a diagnostic service tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to perform a cylinder contribution test or mechanical response test to isolate Cylinder 1.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Supply Issues

If fuel filters are clogged or past their service interval, replace them and prime the fuel system.

  2. Repair Leaks/Wiring

Fix any identified high-pressure fuel leaks or repair damaged wiring in the Cylinder 1 injector harness. Clear the codes and test run the machine.

  3. Replace Cylinder 1 Injector

If fuel pressure and electrical circuits are verified as good, the Cylinder 1 injector has suffered an internal mechanical response failure and must be replaced.

  4. ECU Calibration

After installing a new injector, you must use the CNH diagnostic service tool to enter the new injector's QR code/calibration string into the Engine ECU. This restores self-learning parameters and ensures proper fuel metering.

  5. Clear Codes

Clear the fault codes from the Engine ECU and test run the equipment under load to verify the repair.
