Case IH 3294 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Cylinder 1 Specific Errors - Signal Not Plausible

The engine's computer is receiving an irregular, out-of-range, or illogical electrical signal from the fuel injector circuit for cylinder number 1. It typically points to an electrical failure in the injector itself, a wiring harness issue, or a poor connection preventing the injector from firing correctly.

   Safety First: Disconnect the battery before working on the sensitive common-rail electrical systems.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the fuel injector wiring harness connecting the ECM to the Cylinder 1 injector. Look for chafing, heat damage, or cracked insulation caused by engine vibration.

   Connector Check: Disconnect the harness at the Cylinder 1 injector and at the ECM. Check for pushed-out pins, moisture, dirt, or corrosion inside the weather-sealed connectors.

   Continuity & Short Testing: Use a multimeter to perform a continuity test on the wiring harness between the injector connector and the ECM. Check for shorts to ground or shorts to power.

   Injector Resistance Test: Measure the resistance (ohms) across the terminals of the Cylinder 1 injector coil to verify it is within factory specifications and not internally shorted or open.

   Address Wiring Issues

   If the wiring harness is damaged, corroded, or fails the continuity test, it must be replaced. Splicing is generally not recommended for high-pressure common rail injector signals due to the precise voltage required.

   Replace the Injector (if necessary)

   If the wiring harness tests perfectly but the injector coil resistance is out of specification, the Cylinder 1 fuel injector has failed internally and must be replaced.

   Reassembly

   Install the new component(s). Ensure all weather-sealed connectors are firmly seated and locked to keep moisture and dirt out of the electrical circuits.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic scan tool to the machine and clear the inactive 3294 fault code.

   Test Run

   Start the engine and bring it up to operating temperature. Verify that the engine runs smoothly under load and that the fault code does not return.
