Case IH 3296 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Cylinder 2 Specific Errors - Signal Low
Issue description
This code indicates that the Engine Control Unit is detecting a low electrical signal on the fuel injector circuit for Cylinder 2. This is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, a loose connector, or an internal electrical failure (shorted solenoid) within the Cylinder 2 fuel injector itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 2 fuel injector for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground.
Disconnect the plug at the Cylinder 2 injector and the ECU to check for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture inside the connectors.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the Cylinder 2 fuel injector solenoid and compare to OEM specifications to check for an internal short or open circuit.
Check the continuity of the wires between the ECU connector and the injector connector to isolate whether the fault is in the harness or the injector.
Look for accompanying codes such as 3297 (mechanical response fault) or 3298 (Signal Not Plausible) which further confirm a failed injector.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts or accidental ECU damage during the repair.
Gain Access
Remove the engine hood, side panels, and valve cover (if the injectors are located under the cover on your specific engine model) to access the fuel rail and injectors.
Remove Wiring
Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the Cylinder 2 fuel injector. If the diagnostic tests proved the wiring harness is faulty, replace the engine injector wiring harness.
Remove Fuel Lines
Clean the area around the injector thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the cylinder. Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common rail to the Cylinder 2 injector. Cap the rail fitting immediately.
Extract the Injector
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully extract the fuel injector from the cylinder head.
Clean and Prep
Remove and discard the old copper sealing washer and O-rings. Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head using an appropriate bore brush.
Install New Injector
Fit a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings onto the replacement injector. Seat the new injector into the bore.
Reassembly
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the OEM specification. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line (leave slightly loose if bleeding is required, otherwise torque to spec).
Reconnect Wiring
Plug the electrical connector back into the new injector. Reinstall the valve cover and engine panels.
Finalize
Reconnect the battery. Prime/bleed the fuel system as per the manufacturer's procedure. Use a diagnostic tool to clear fault code 3296 and run the engine to verify the repair.
