Case IH 3297 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Rail pressure positive deviation high and high fuel flow set point value

Issue description

This code indicates a severe mismatch in the Common Rail fuel system. The actual fuel rail pressure is significantly higher than the commanded setpoint, while the fuel metering unit (FCA/M-PROP) is simultaneously commanding a high fuel flow. The system is unable to regulate the pressure down to safe operating parameters.

Check the cause

  1. Check the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and its wiring harness for shorts, opens, or implausible signals (an artificially low reading causes the ECM to command maximum fuel flow).

  2. Inspect the Fuel Metering Unit (FCA / M-PROP) on the high-pressure fuel pump for proper electrical operation, wiring integrity, or being mechanically stuck open.

  3. Inspect the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) on the fuel rail to see if it has 'popped' or is leaking due to a pressure spike.

  4. Check for restrictions or blockages in the fuel return lines to the tank, which can cause back-pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Turn off the engine and allow the high-pressure fuel system to depressurize completely before opening any lines.

  2. Test/Replace the Pressure Sensor

    Using a diagnostic tool (like the CNH EASy tool), monitor the rail pressure with the key on, engine off. If it does not read zero (or atmospheric), replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor.

  3. Inspect/Replace the Fuel Metering Unit

    If the sensor is accurate, the metering unit on the high-pressure pump is likely stuck. Remove and replace the Fuel Metering Control Valve. (Note: On some Bosch pumps, this requires replacing the entire high-pressure pump assembly).

  4. Replace the Pressure Relief Valve

    If the system experienced a true high-pressure spike (positive deviation), the PRV on the rail has likely been compromised. It is highly recommended to replace the PRV to ensure it regulates fuel pressure within safe operating parameters.

  5. Clear Codes and Verify

    Use the diagnostic tool to clear the EDC fault codes (including 3297 and any related BIP search failures). Run the engine and verify that the commanded rail pressure matches the actual rail pressure under load.
