Case IH 3299 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC / EDC7: Cylinder 3 Specific Errors - No Signal

Issue description

The engine control module is not detecting an electrical signal or current draw from the cylinder 3 fuel injector solenoid. The underlying condition is typically an open circuit, a disconnected or damaged wiring harness, or a completely failed internal solenoid coil inside the cylinder 3 fuel injector.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the cylinder 3 fuel injector for chafing, breaks, or heat damage

  2. Check the electrical connector at the cylinder 3 injector and the ECU pins to ensure they are clean, tight, and free of corrosion or pushed-out pins

  3. Test the cylinder 3 injector coil using a digital multimeter to measure resistance across the terminals. An infinite resistance (OL) reading indicates an open internal solenoid coil

  4. Check for short circuits to ground or to the battery on the injector circuit, which can masquerade as a signal loss if the ECU cuts power to protect the circuit

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Gain Access

    Remove the engine valve cover or necessary access panels to reach the cylinder 3 fuel injector.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical connector from the cylinder 3 injector.

  4. Harness Repair (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic tests proved the wiring harness is faulty, repair the broken wire or replace the injector harness section.

  5. Remove the Injector

    If the injector coil failed, remove the high-pressure fuel line connected to cylinder 3 and remove the injector hold-down clamp.

  6. Clean and Prep

    Extract the faulty cylinder 3 injector. Thoroughly clean the injector bore and seat in the cylinder head, ensuring no debris falls into the cylinder.

  7. Install New Injector

    Install the new fuel injector using a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings. Torque the hold-down clamp and high-pressure fuel lines to exact OEM specifications.

  8. Reconnect

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the injector and reinstall the valve cover.

  9. ECU Programming (Crucial)

    Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH EST tool) and program the new injector's IMA (Injector Adjustment) calibration code into the Engine ECU. Note: Failure to program the IMA code will result in rough running and will trigger secondary fault codes (e.g., 3907 - IMA programming not correct for injector cylinder 3).

  10. Final Test

    Reconnect the battery, prime/bleed the fuel system, clear the inactive fault codes, and test run the engine to verify the repair.
