Case IH 33 – Transmission ECM: SOL_DUMP_SHORT_DIS_ERR / SOL_DUMP_SHORT_ERR (Dump Solenoid Coil Short Circuit)

Issue description

The system has detected a short circuit in the transmission's dump solenoid circuit. This fault triggers while the tractor is being driven in forward or reverse, or while the tractor is in neutral.

Applies to these machines

  • JXC
  • TN Series
  • TNA Series
  • TNDA Series
  • TNSA Series
  • TN60A
  • TN70A
  • TN75A
  • NT75D

Check the cause

  1. Disconnect the control panel and the connections on the Transmission ECM to inspect the harness.

  2. Perform a pin-to-pin test between ECM connector 1, pin 18 (CN1-18) and ECM connector 1, pin 2 (CN1-2) for a short circuit (also check between CN1-16 and CN1-4 depending on harness version).

  3. Perform a voltmeter test by connecting the red lead (+) to CN1-18 and the black lead (-) to a good chassis ground.

  4. Inspect the dump solenoid directly and test for a dead short across the two coil terminals.

  5. If the wiring harness and solenoid coil test within normal specifications and show no shorts to ground, suspect a faulty Transmission ECM.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the transmission control valve assembly where the Dump Solenoid is mounted.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Dump Solenoid.

Inspect the connector for melted plastic, water ingress, or chafed wires that could be causing the short.

  4. Remove the retaining bolts holding the solenoid and valve assembly to the transmission housing.

Perform this step if the solenoid coil was proven faulty during diagnostics.

  5. Remove the old dump solenoid.

  6. Coat the new valve components and O-rings with clean transmission oil prior to assembly.

Case IH Akcela Nexplore Fluid is recommended by the OEM.

  7. Install the new Dump Solenoid.

Tighten the retaining bolts to a torque value of 27 Nm (20 lb-ft).

  8. Reconnect the wiring harness to the solenoid.

  9. Clear the fault codes using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's H Menu diagnostic interface.

  10. Start the tractor and test drive in forward, reverse, and neutral.

Verify the Transmission Status Lamp remains off and the code does not return.
