Case IH 3305 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Cylinder 4 BIP Search Failure - Too Many Unsuccessful Searches - Rail Pressure below Minimum Limit in Controlled Mode
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is attempting to determine the Beginning of Injection Period (BIP) for the fuel injector on Cylinder 4 but has failed after too many attempts. Concurrently, the common rail fuel pressure has dropped below the minimum allowable limit while operating in controlled mode. This combination almost always indicates a massive loss of fuel pressure caused by a mechanical failure or excessive return leakage at the Cylinder 4 injector, or a failure in the fuel metering unit.

Check the cause
Check the low-pressure fuel system, ensuring fuel filters are clean and the lift pump is supplying adequate pressure to the high-pressure pump.
Visually inspect the high-pressure fuel rail, lines, and fittings for any external fuel leaks.
Perform an injector leak-off (return flow) test, focusing specifically on Cylinder 4 to see if the injector is bypassing excessive fuel back to the tank.
Test electrical connections and the wiring harness to the Cylinder 4 injector and the fuel metering unit (M-Prop/FCA) for shorts, opens, or corrosion.
Monitor live data for actual vs. desired fuel rail pressure using a diagnostic scan tool during cranking and operation.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Ensure the engine is off and the high-pressure fuel system has completely depressurized before opening any lines.
Filter Maintenance
If low fuel pressure is suspected across the board, replace the primary and secondary fuel filters and bleed the fuel system.
Replace Cylinder 4 Injector
If the leak-off test confirms Cylinder 4 is returning too much fuel or failing the BIP electrical test: Access the Cylinder 4 injector (removing the valve cover if necessary). Disconnect the electrical connector and the high-pressure fuel line to the injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp and extract the injector. Clean the injector bore thoroughly. Install the new injector with a new copper sealing washer and O-rings. Torque the hold-down clamp and install a new high-pressure fuel line (these are typically single-use crush fittings).
Fuel Metering Unit (Alternative)
If the injectors test fine, the issue may be the fuel metering unit on the high-pressure pump failing to maintain pressure. Remove and replace the metering unit.
ECU Calibration
Reconnect all lines and harnesses. Use a diagnostic tool to enter the new injector's trim code (IQA code) into the Engine ECU so it can properly calculate the BIP.
Testing
Prime the fuel system, start the engine, clear the 3305 fault code, and test run the machine under load to verify rail pressure remains within limits.
