Case IH 3309 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Rail Pressure above Maximum Limit in Controlled Mode
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the fuel pressure within the high-pressure common rail has spiked and exceeded the maximum allowable safety threshold while the system is actively trying to regulate it. This is typically caused by a mechanical failure in the fuel metering unit (sticking), a restricted fuel return line, or a faulty rail pressure sensor giving a false high reading.

Check the cause
Verify the code: Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm code 3309 is active. Check for accompanying voltage codes (short to battery/ground) which would indicate a wiring issue rather than a mechanical failure.
Check fuel return lines (restricted line cause): Inspect the fuel return lines running from the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel rail back to the fuel tank. A restricted, kinked, or blocked return line will cause fuel pressure to build up rapidly.
Inspect wiring and connectors: Check the wiring harness between the Engine ECU, the Fuel Metering Unit, and the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.
Test the rail pressure sensor (faulty sensor cause): Monitor the rail pressure sensor output voltage via the EST. If it reads maximum pressure when the engine is off, the sensor is faulty.
Test the fuel metering unit (sticking unit cause): Check the resistance of the fuel metering unit solenoid. If it is stuck open, it will allow maximum fuel volume into the rail, causing an overpressure event.
Repair steps
Relieve System Pressure
Turn off the engine and allow the machine to sit so the high-pressure fuel system can depressurize. Warning: High-pressure diesel fuel can penetrate the skin and cause severe injury.
Clear Return Lines
If diagnostic checks revealed a blocked fuel return line, clear the blockage or replace the collapsed hose.
Replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor (If Faulty)
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor located on the fuel rail. Unscrew the sensor. Install the new sensor and torque to OEM specifications.
Replace the Fuel Metering Unit (If Faulty)
Locate the fuel metering unit (MPROP) on the high-pressure fuel pump. Disconnect the electrical harness. Remove the mounting bolts and carefully extract the metering unit. Lubricate the O-rings on the new metering unit with clean diesel fuel and install it into the pump. Torque the bolts to spec.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the EST, clear the inactive 3309 fault code, and start the engine. Monitor the actual vs. desired rail pressure to ensure the system is regulating correctly.
