Case IH 3309 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC - Electronic Diesel Control): Fuel rail pressure has exceeded the maximum limit

The engine control module has detected that the fuel pressure in the common rail spiked above 2000 bar (29,000 psi) for a continuous period of greater than 1 second. This occurs when the fuel metering unit defaults to a wide-open state due to electrical or mechanical failure.

   Check for preceding active electrical codes such as 3137, 3910, 3293, or 3301 and diagnose them first

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors going to the Fuel Metering Unit and the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins

   Use a diagnostic tool to monitor commanded versus actual fuel rail pressure to verify if the sensor is falsely reporting high pressure

   Resolve Electrical Opens

   If an open circuit code (like 3137) is present, repair the broken wire or replace the damaged connector at the Fuel Metering Unit. Clear the codes; if 3309 does not return, the repair is complete.

   Replace the Fuel Metering Unit (FCA)

   If the wiring is intact and the ECU is correctly commanding fuel pressure but the actual pressure remains dangerously high, the Fuel Metering Unit is mechanically stuck open. Remove the unit from the high-pressure fuel pump and install a replacement.

   Replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor

   If diagnostic testing proves the actual rail pressure is normal but the sensor is falsely reporting >2000 bar, depressurize the fuel system, remove the faulty sensor from the common rail, and install a new sensor.

   Clear and Test

   Clear the DTC 1865 / 3309 from the Engine ECU. Run the machine under load to verify that rail pressure tracks the commanded setpoint without exceeding the maximum limit.
