Case IH 3309 (F-1442-00) - ECU – Engine ECU: Fuel rail pressure has exceeded maximum limit

Issue description

The engine controller has detected that the actual pressure in the high-pressure common rail (HPCR) has spiked above the maximum allowable threshold (e.g., exceeding 1,700,000 hPa / 1700 bar for more than 1000 ms) while the system is in controlled mode. This is typically caused by a malfunctioning fuel metering unit (FCA/M-Prop) over-supplying the pump, a skewed fuel rail pressure sensor reading, or an electrical issue.

Check the cause

  1. Check for cascading fault codes (3106, 3137, 3910, 3293, 3301) and resolve them first before addressing 3309

  2. Verify that the tractor battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump box or charger), which can skew sensor readings

  3. Test low-pressure fuel delivery vacuum between the inlet of the low-pressure pump and the fuel tank (should not exceed 127 mm / 5 inches of Hg)

  4. Test fuel supply pressure between the fuel filter and the inlet to the high-pressure pump (minimum of 5 bar / 72 psi with engine loaded or unloaded)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect External Power

    Remove any external battery chargers or power supplies and cycle the key to see if the code clears.

  2. Inspect Wiring

    Check the wiring harnesses and connectors going to the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and the Fuel Metering Unit (mounted on the high-pressure injection pump). Look for chafed wires, short circuits to battery/ground, or loose pins.

  3. Verify Fuel Supply

    Perform the vacuum and pressure tests on the low-pressure fuel circuit as outlined in the diagnostics step. Replace fuel filters if there is a restriction.

  4. Replace Faulty Components

    If the wiring and low-pressure fuel supply are verified to be in good condition, the fault is hardware-related. Replace the suspect component, which is most commonly a sticking Fuel Metering Unit (FCA) failing to regulate fuel volume entering the pump, or a failed Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor reporting falsely high pressures.

  5. Clear and Test

    Clear the ECU fault codes using a diagnostic tool and run the engine under load to verify the rail pressure remains within the specified parameters.
