Case IH 3310 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Cylinder 5 Specific Errors - Signal Not Plausible
Issue description
The engine controller is receiving an irregular, out-of-range, or illogical electrical signal from the fuel injector on cylinder number 5. This typically points to an electrical failure within the injector's internal solenoid, a wiring harness issue (such as a short, open circuit, or high resistance), or a poor connection at the injector plug.

Check the cause
Scan for Related Codes: Use the CNH EASy diagnostic tool to retrieve the DTCs. Check if there are accompanying codes for rail pressure drops or other cylinder faults (e.g., 3309, 3311) which might indicate a broader fuel rail issue rather than an isolated injector failure.
Wiring Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECU and the Cylinder 5 injector. Look for chafing, melted wires, corrosion, or loose pins.
Solenoid Resistance Test: Disconnect the plug at the Cylinder 5 injector and use a multimeter to measure the resistance (ohms) across the injector terminals. Compare the reading to OEM specifications to determine if the injector solenoid is internally shorted or open.
Cylinder Contribution Test: If the engine runs, perform an injector kill test via the diagnostic tool to confirm that Cylinder 5 is the dead or underperforming cylinder.
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure the ECU is powered down.
Gain Access
Remove the engine valve cover or necessary access panels to reach the fuel injectors.
Disconnect Electricals
Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the Cylinder 5 fuel injector.
Remove Fuel Lines
Disconnect the high-pressure fuel injection line from the injector. Cap the fuel rail and the line immediately to prevent dirt or debris from contaminating the fuel system.
Extract the Injector
Remove the injector hold-down clamp or bolt. Carefully pull the Cylinder 5 fuel injector out of the cylinder head.
Clean and Prep
Clean the injector bore thoroughly. Ensure the old sealing washer is removed and no debris falls into the combustion chamber.
Install New Injector
Place a new sealing washer/O-ring on the replacement injector. Insert the new injector into the bore and torque the hold-down clamp to the exact OEM specification.
Reassemble
Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and torque it to spec. Reconnect the electrical plug to the injector.
Close Up
Reinstall the valve cover and any removed panels. Reconnect the battery.
ECU Reset & Calibration
Use the CNH diagnostic scanner to clear the stored 3310 fault code. If installing a new common rail injector, you may need to program the new injector's trim code/IQA code into the ECU so it can adjust the fueling properly.
Test
Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify smooth operation.
