Case IH 3315 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Minimum Number of Injections Not Reached - Stop Engine

Issue description

The engine control module has detected that the fuel injection system is physically unable to achieve the minimum required number of injection events (or fuel volume) necessary to maintain safe engine operation. Because the system cannot sustain combustion parameters, the controller initiates a forced engine shutdown.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the fuel tank has adequate fuel and check for water or severe contamination in the fuel water separator.

  2. Inspect all low-pressure fuel lines for air leaks, collapsed hoses, or blockages. Air in the system will prevent the injectors from reaching the minimum injection threshold.

  3. Check the primary and secondary fuel filters for clogging.

  4. Using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or EASY diagnostic tool, monitor the actual vs. desired high-pressure fuel rail pressure during cranking.

  5. Perform a manual injector return flow (leak-off) test to see if one or more injectors are stuck open and bleeding rail pressure back to the tank.

  6. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the EDC to the fuel metering unit (M-PROP) and the injectors for chafing, shorts, or open circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Service the Fuel Filters

    Drain the water separator. Remove and replace both the primary and secondary fuel filters to rule out fuel starvation.

  2. Bleed the System

    Prime the fuel system thoroughly to ensure all air is purged from the low-pressure and high-pressure lines.

  3. Test Run and Monitor

    Clear the 3315 fault code using the diagnostic tool. Attempt to start the engine while monitoring the fuel rail pressure.

  4. Address High-Pressure Leaks

    If the engine still shuts down and rail pressure drops, isolate the injectors based on the results of your leak-off test.

  5. Replace Faulty Injectors

    Remove any injectors that are returning excessive fuel. Install the new injectors, replace the injector sealing washers, and torque the hold-down clamps to OEM specifications. Note: You must program the new injector trim codes (IQA codes) into the EDC using the diagnostic tool.

  6. Inspect/Replace Fuel Metering Unit

    If the injectors are healthy but rail pressure is still erratic or too low, remove and inspect the fuel metering unit on the high-pressure pump. If it is sticking or electrically failed, replace it.

  7. High-Pressure Pump Replacement

    If all other components pass inspection and the minimum injection threshold still cannot be reached, the high-pressure fuel pump has likely failed internally and must be replaced.
