Case IH 3316 – Engine ECU (Electronic Diesel Control / EDC module): Minimum number of injections not reached - stop engine

This code indicates a critical failure in the fuel injection system. The engine control unit has detected that the fuel injectors are not firing the minimum required number of times to sustain safe engine operation. To prevent catastrophic engine damage or unsafe operating conditions, the system forces an automatic engine shutdown.

   Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check for other active fault codes related to fuel rail pressure (e.g., 3313) or sensor supply voltages, as these can trigger 3316 as a secondary code.

   Visually inspect the engine wiring harness, specifically the routing between the Engine ECU and the fuel injectors, for chafing, corrosion, or loose connector pins.

   Test the wiring harness for continuity, shorts to ground, or open circuits.

   Check the Wiring

   Perform a comprehensive pin-out test of the injector wiring harness.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If any breaks, shorts, or high-resistance areas are found in the harness, repair the damaged section or replace the engine wiring harness.

   Replace the ECU

   If the wiring harness tests perfectly fine and the connections are secure, the fault lies within the Engine Control Unit itself. Replace the ECU.

   Reprogram and Clear

   Install the new ECU, flash it with the correct dataset/software variant for the specific tractor using the EST, and clear the fault codes memory.
