Case IH 3321 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Timeout of CAN Message DM1DCU SPN4

Issue description

Communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the system has stopped receiving the expected diagnostic messages (DM1) from the Dosing Control Unit (DCU), which is the module responsible for managing the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) / AdBlue dosing in the SCR emissions system.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum series (180, 200, 220, 235-340 Series 4, 380)
  • Case IH Steiger series (370, 420, 470, 500, 540, 580, 620)
  • Case IH Maxxum series
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Optum series

Check the cause

  1. Check if the Dosing Control Unit (DCU) is actively being programmed (if programming is occurring, ignore the code, clear it after programming finishes, and retest)

  2. Look for other active CAN fault codes or DCU power/voltage codes (such as battery voltage sensing errors) which might indicate a broader electrical issue

  3. Inspect the physical wiring harness and CAN line connections between the Engine ECU and the Dosing Control Unit for open circuits, shorts, or defective connections

  4. Verify the terminal resistance on the CAN bus to ensure it is suitable, and verify that the DCU is properly configured and recognized on the network

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Wiring Issues

If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring, incorrect terminal resistance, or loose connectors at the DCU or ECU, repair or replace the affected harness sections.

  2. Replace the DCU

If the wiring, power, and grounds are intact but the CAN timeout persists, the Dosing Control Unit itself is likely suffering from an internal failure and must be replaced.

  3. Program the New Module

A replacement DEF Dosing Control Unit must be programmed to the specific vehicle using an Electronic Service Tool after installation.

  4. Clear Codes and Retest

Once the repair or replacement is complete, clear the fault codes from both the ECU and DCU modules and run the machine to verify that the CAN communication is restored and the code does not return.
