Case IH 3322 – Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN Message ERC1DR

This is a J1939 CAN bus communication error. It means the engine control module has stopped receiving the expected data frame (message) from the electronic retarder/exhaust brake controller within the required time limit.

   Check for other related CAN timeout codes (e.g., EBC1, ETC1) or 'Bus Off' codes to determine if the entire CAN backbone is compromised.

   Inspect the J1939 CAN bus wiring harness (CAN High and CAN Low lines) connecting the Engine ECU to the Retarder/Exhaust Brake Controller for chafing, cuts, or melted insulation.

   Inspect the CAN harness connectors at the vehicle end of the Engine ECU for disconnected, loose, or 'virtually connected' (corroded/pushed-back) pins.

   Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test with the battery disconnected by measuring resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a missing terminating resistor or open circuit).

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the key switch and disconnect the battery negative cable to protect the modules.

   Disconnect and Reconnect

   Disconnect the CAN line and reconnect at the Engine ECU and the Retarder Controller. Clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner, ensure no pins are bent, and securely seat the connectors.

   Repair Wiring

   If a break or short is found in the CAN High or CAN Low wires during inspection, cut out the damaged section and splice in new wiring using environmentally sealed crimp connectors. Ensure the twisted pair configuration is maintained for the CAN wires.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool). Start the engine and verify if the code returns.

   Module Replacement

   If the wiring is perfectly intact, the terminating resistors test good, and the code persists, the Retarder Controller is likely failing to send the document/message. The controller (or in rare cases, the Engine ECU) will require replacement and reprogramming by a dealer.
