Case IH 3328 – Engine Controller (ENG): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-AR (When Inactive)

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has lost communication or timed out while waiting to receive the TSC1-AR (Torque Speed Control 1 - Armrest) message over the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus while the system is in an inactive state.

   Check for accompanying CAN bus communication codes (e.g., 3329, 3330, or Armrest ERR COM codes like 12011) to determine if there is a broader CAN bus failure.

   Inspect the wiring harness for places where it may have rubbed under the cab, at pivot points, or near the engine, causing a short or open circuit.

   Inspect the connectors between the Engine ECU and the Armrest controller for corrosion, loose pins, or moisture.

   Measure the voltage on the CAN High (Yellow) and CAN Low (Green) wires. A healthy CAN bus should typically read around 2.5V and 2.4V respectively.

   Test the CAN bus terminating resistors with the battery disconnected. A healthy CAN bus should measure approximately 60 Ohms across the CAN High and CAN Low pins.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during testing.

   Isolate the Fault

   If the CAN bus voltage or resistance is out of spec, disconnect modules one by one (e.g., Armrest controller, instrument cluster) to see if the CAN bus resistance returns to normal (60 Ohms). If disconnecting a specific module fixes the bus reading, that module or its immediate connector is faulty.

   Repair Wiring

   If a break or short is found in the harness (often under the cab), splice and repair the CAN wires using appropriate twisted-pair repair techniques, or replace the damaged harness section.

   Replace Terminating Resistors

   If a terminating resistor is found to be faulty (open or shorted), replace it. Note: Case IH has a service bulletin recommending upgrading older active terminators to a newer passive "cap style" terminator (a simple 120 Ohm resistor) as they are less likely to fail.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's diagnostic menu to clear the fault codes. Verify that code 3328 does not return.
