Issue description

This code indicates a communication failure on the J1939 CAN bus network. Specifically, the TSC1-DE (Torque/Speed Control 1 - Driveline to Engine) message is missing or has timed out. The engine controller expects to receive continuous torque and speed command messages from the driveline, transmission, or main vehicle controller. When this message is not received within the expected timeframe, the system logs code 3330 and may restrict engine RPM or prevent the machine from moving.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN bus codes (e.g., TCU disconnected, Armrest communication errors) to determine if multiple modules are offline, indicating a main CAN bus failure.

  2. Test CAN bus resistance with the key off and battery disconnected by measuring across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port or ECU connector (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a missing/failed resistor, out of limits indicates an open circuit).

  3. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Transmission/Vehicle Controller for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins, particularly under the cab or near the engine block.

  4. Verify the driveline/vehicle controller sending the TSC1-DE message has proper 12V power and clean ground connections, as low voltage will cause it to drop offline.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Harness

    Locate the main CAN bus harness connecting the Engine ECU to the vehicle's main controller network (often routed through the cab bulkhead).

  3. Repair or Replace Wiring

    If physical damage (chafing/cuts) is found in the CAN bus lines (typically yellow and green wires), repair the wires using OEM-approved splicing methods or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Check/Replace Terminating Resistors

    If the resistance test failed, locate the CAN bus terminating resistors (often found at the ends of the CAN circuit, such as near the air filter or behind the controllers). Replace any faulty resistors.

  5. Clean Connectors

    Disconnect the ECU and TCU connectors. Spray with electrical contact cleaner, ensure no pins are pushed back, and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the AFS Pro monitor to clear the inactive 3330 code. Start the engine and test drive the machine to verify throttle response and driveline engagement are restored.
