Case IH 3331 – Engine Controller (ENG / EDC): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-DE (When Active)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication or timed out while expecting the TSC1-DE (Torque/Speed Control 1 - Driveline to Engine / Driven Equipment) CAN message from the transmission or driveline controller. This means the engine controller is not receiving the required torque/speed commands from the driveline over the CAN bus network.

Check the cause

  1. Check CAN Bus Cabling: Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Transmission/Driveline controller for physical damage, chafing, or breaks.

  2. Check CAN Functional Range: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port or controller connector (should read approximately 60 ohms).

  3. Check for Shorts: Test the CAN lines for a short to ground, short to power, or a short between the CAN High and CAN Low wires.

  4. Verify Sender Protocol: Ensure the transmission controller is online and functioning accurately, as a loss of power or failure will prevent it from sending the message.

  5. Check Parametering: Verify that the software parameters on both the Engine ECU and Transmission controller are accurate and up to date.

Repair steps

  1. Visual Inspection

    Locate the main engine wiring harness and trace the CAN bus lines between the Engine ECU and the Transmission controller. Look for rub points, especially where the harness routes under the cab or near the chassis.

  2. Connector Maintenance

    Disconnect the harness at the Engine ECU and the Transmission controller. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals. Clean with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease if necessary.

  3. Isolate the Fault

    If the CAN bus resistance is 120 ohms, one of the terminating resistors has failed or there is an open circuit in the wiring. If the resistance is 0 ohms, the CAN lines are shorted together. Repair the wiring break or replace the shorted harness section.

  4. Software Update

    If the wiring and terminating resistors test perfectly, connect a diagnostic service tool (such as the CNH EST) to check if the transmission controller is online. Reflash or update the software on the Engine ECU and Transmission controller to resolve potential parametering bugs.

  5. Component Replacement

    If a controller is internally shorted or fails to transmit despite good power, ground, and wiring, replace the defective ECU or Transmission controller.
