Case IH 3332 – Engine Controller (EDC / Engine ECU): Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-DR (When Inactive)
Issue description
This fault code indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the Engine Controller has stopped receiving the TSC1-DR (Torque/Speed Control 1 - Driveline) message from the transmission or driveline controller. The timeout occurred while the torque/speed correction mode was not actively being requested.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying CAN timeout codes (e.g., TSC1-PE, TSC1-TE, TSC1-VE) to see if the entire CAN bus is down or the Engine ECU is isolated.
Perform a Termination Resistance Test with the machine powered off and battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms between CAN High and CAN Low).
Perform a CAN Voltage Test with the key ON (CAN High should read 2.5V to 3.0V, CAN Low should read 2.0V to 2.5V).
Visually inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Transmission/Driveline Controller for chafing, heat damage, or pinched wires.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during harness testing.
Inspect Connectors
Locate the Engine ECU and the Driveline/Transmission Controller. Disconnect the main harness connectors at both modules. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back pins (a very common cause of intermittent CAN drops).
Test Harness Continuity
Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires end-to-end between the ECU and the TCU.
Check for Shorts
Test both CAN wires for continuity to ground (chassis) and continuity to power. There should be infinite resistance (no continuity).
Repair Wiring
If a break, short, or high resistance is found, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness using OEM-approved splicing methods, or replace the affected harness section.
Clean and Reconnect
Clean the module pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seals, and securely reconnect the modules.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes from the Engine ECU.
Test Drive
Operate the tractor to verify communication is restored and the code does not return. If the wiring is perfect but the code persists, the CAN transceiver inside the ECU or TCU may be faulty, requiring module replacement.
