Case IH 3334 (F-518495-09) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN communication failure or timeout regarding the TSC1-PE (Torque Speed Control) message
Issue description
The engine controller is expecting a torque command/status message from the main vehicle controller over the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus, but the message is not being received within the expected timeframe (timeout when active).

Check the cause
Check for accompanying CAN bus error codes (e.g., 3335, 3338, 3339, or 3358) which indicate a broader network failure rather than an isolated torque message issue
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Vehicle Controller (cab) and the Engine ECU (engine compartment) for chafing, melted wires, or pinch points
Disconnect the ECU and Vehicle Controller connectors to check for pushed-back pins, moisture intrusion, or oxidation (green corrosion)
With the batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read approximately 60 ohms, indicating both 120-ohm terminating resistors are intact)
Check if the ECU and Vehicle Controller have the latest software flashes via the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST)
Repair steps
Isolate the CAN Network
Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the Vehicle Controller harness to the Engine ECU harness.
Test for Shorts
Test the CAN lines for a short to ground or a short to power (12V).
Repair Wiring
If an open circuit or short is found, repair the damaged section of the twisted-pair CAN wiring. Ensure any splices maintain the twisted-pair configuration to prevent electromagnetic interference.
Clean Connections
If the wiring tests good but connectors are dirty, apply electrical contact cleaner to the ECU and Vehicle Controller pins. Apply dielectric grease to the connector seals (not directly on the pins) to prevent future moisture ingress.
Update Software
If the physical layer is perfectly intact, connect the CNH EST diagnostic laptop and update the ECU software to the latest version.
Module Replacement (Last Resort)
If the wiring is flawless, software is updated, and the ECU still cannot receive CAN messages (internal CAN transceiver failure), the Engine ECU or Vehicle Controller must be replaced and reprogrammed.
Clear and Verify
Clear the fault codes and test-run the machine under load to ensure the TSC1-PE communication is restored and code 3334 does not return.
