3334 (F-518496-09) - ECU

Case IH 3334 (F-518496-09) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Timeout of CAN message TSC1-PE Torque

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has stopped receiving the expected torque/speed command messages from the vehicle's main controller, instrument cluster, or armrest over the CAN bus network.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum series
  • Steiger series
  • Puma tractors
  • Maxxum tractors
  • Axial-Flow Combines
  • 580 Super N Backhoes and loaders

Check the cause

  1. Check the primary CAN data link (J1939) wiring harness between the Vehicle Controller/Instrument Cluster and the Engine ECU for open circuits, shorts to power, or shorts to ground.

  2. Inspect the harness connectors at both the ECU and the vehicle controller for bent, spread, corroded, or loose terminals.

  3. Look for other active CAN bus faults (such as P0600 Serial Communication Link or 14011 Communications Lost) which would indicate a total CAN bus failure rather than an isolated TSC1 message issue.

  4. Verify that the Engine ECU is properly configured for J1939 TSC1 throttle control and that the correct Source Address is set for the TSC1 messages.

Repair steps

  1. Test the CAN Bus

Use a multimeter or CAN bus diagnostic tool to verify the integrity of the CAN network (check for the standard 60 ohms of resistance across CAN High and CAN Low with the battery disconnected, indicating both terminating resistors are intact).

  2. Repair Wiring

If the wiring harness is damaged, chafed, or shorted, repair the affected section of the harness or replace the communication harness entirely.

  3. Clean/Repair Connectors

If corrosion or loose pins are found at the ECU connector, clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and re-tension or replace the damaged pins.

  4. Update Software

If the physical wiring is intact, connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and flash the Engine ECU and Vehicle Controller with the latest software updates.

  5. Replace the ECU

If all wiring, power, ground, and software checks pass but the ECU still cannot receive CAN messages (indicating a failed internal CAN transceiver), the Engine Control Unit must be replaced and programmed to the machine.
