Case IH 3334 (DTC 98BB / 99BB) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN communication failure between vehicle controller and ECU controller - TSC1_PE message

Issue description

Timeout of the CAN message 'TSC1-PE' (Torque Speed Control 1 - Power/Engine) when active. The Engine Control Unit is expecting to receive this torque command message from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) over the main vehicle interface bus (CAN Node A Bus), but the message is either corrupted or not arriving within the expected timeframe.

Check the cause

  1. Check for external power supplies (like a jump box or high-amperage charger) connected to the tractor battery, which can cause temporary CAN communication glitches.

  2. Check for accompanying fault codes. If the VCM is offline or there are multiple CAN timeout errors, the issue is likely a broader bus failure rather than an isolated ECU issue.

  3. Inspect the twisted pair wiring of the CAN Node A Bus (the main vehicle interface bus) between the VCM and the ECU for opens, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.

  4. Verify the CAN termination resistance on the CAN Node A Bus with the battery disconnected (it should typically read around 60 ohms).

  5. Check if the ECU A-095 has the most up-to-date software version, as communication timeouts can sometimes be resolved with a software re-flash.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect external power

    If an external power supply is connected to the tractor, disconnect it, cycle the key, and test the system for normal operation to see if the code clears.

  2. Repair harness

    If wiring damage is found during the diagnostic checks between the Vehicle Controller and the Engine ECU, repair the damaged twisted-pair wires or replace the affected harness section. Ensure all connector pins are clean, tight, and free of corrosion.

  3. Re-flash software

    If the wiring is intact, connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Check the ECU A-095 for the appropriate software. If an update is available or the software is corrupted, re-flash the ECU.

  4. Replace ECU

    If the ECU A-095 cannot be re-flashed, or if the internal power stage / SPI bus communication chip has failed permanently, the Engine Control Unit must be replaced.

  5. Perform post-repair calibration

    After replacing the ECU, use the service tool to restore self-learning parameters and write the correct injector codes into the new controller memory.
