Case IH 3335 – Engine Controller (EDC / Engine ECU): Timeout of CAN message TSC1-PE Torque (When Inactive)

Issue description

This indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication failure. Specifically, the engine controller has lost the Torque Speed Control 1 - Power Electronics (TSC1-PE) data message from the transmission or powertrain controller while the torque control system was in an inactive state.

Check the cause

  1. Check Ground Connections: A primary cause of CAN communication timeouts on these tractors is poor grounding. Inspect all cab, chassis, and ECU grounds to ensure they are clean and tight.

  2. Inspect CAN Bus Terminators: Check the CAN bus terminating resistors. Older Case IH models utilized "active" terminators that are highly prone to failure and cause erratic CAN timeouts. Check if the tractor has the older square 4-pin active terminators or the updated triangular 3-pin passive terminators.

  3. Test the FNRP Switch: The Forward-Neutral-Reverse-Park (FNRP) shuttle lever magnetism switch can fail and disrupt powertrain CAN messaging. Check for accompanying transmission codes (such as TRANS 60 or TRANS 136) which point to a failing FNRP pod.

  4. Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the CAN wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the instrumentation/armrest controllers for chafing, shorts to ground, or open circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Clean Grounds

    Remove, clean, and securely reattach the main chassis and ECU ground cables.

  3. Upgrade CAN Terminators (If Applicable)

    If the tractor is equipped with the older, failure-prone active terminators (part 284638A2), they must be replaced. Install the updated "cap style" passive terminator (120 Ohm resistor). Because the new terminator uses a 3-pin connector, you will need to install a terminator adapter harness to convert the tractor's 4-pin connector to the 3-pin style. Note: Do not replace the active terminator used specifically for the auto-guidance system, as this application requires the active style.

  4. Replace FNRP Lever (If Applicable)

    If diagnostics point to a failed shuttle lever, remove the steering column or armrest trim (depending on the model), disconnect the wiring pigtail, and swap in a new FNRP shuttle switch/lever assembly.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic service tool (such as the Case IH EST or Jaltest) to clear the engine and transmission fault codes. Test drive the tractor to ensure reverse/forward engagement is restored and the code does not return.
