3336

Case IH 3336 – Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-TR

Issue description

This code indicates a CAN bus communication failure. The Engine ECU is failing to receive the expected TSC1-TR (Torque/Speed Control #1 from Traction Control to Retarder/Transmission) message from the Transmission Controller or Traction Control module while the system is in an inactive state.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines (7230, 8230, 9230)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the CAN Bus cabling between the Engine ECU and the Transmission Controller for physical damage, chafing, short circuits, or power interrupts.

  2. Disconnect the CAN cable connecting the Transmission Controller to the network and inspect for bent, spread, corroded, or loose terminals.

  3. Verify the voltage supply to the Transmission Controller, as an undervoltage condition can cause it to drop off the CAN network.

  4. Check the CAN bus terminating resistors, which should measure approximately 60 ohms across the CAN High and CAN Low pins with the battery disconnected.

  5. Test the protocol of the receiver and check the CAN functional range to ensure the modules are programmed correctly and broadcasting on the correct Source Addresses.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve wiring faults

If diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire, short circuit, or damaged connector in the CAN bus lines, repair the wiring harness using an approved CAN bus repair kit or replace the affected harness section.

  2. Replace terminating resistors

If the CAN bus resistance is out of specification (e.g., 120 ohms or open circuit), locate and replace the faulty CAN bus terminating resistor.

  3. Address undervoltage

If the Transmission Controller is not receiving proper voltage, trace the power supply circuit back to the relays/fuses and repair the power interrupt.

  4. Replace defective module

If the wiring, power, and terminating resistors are all intact, the fault lies within a defective CAN controller inside either the Transmission Controller or the Engine ECU. The defective module must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
