Case IH 3339 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / ECM): CAN Message Not Received From Vehicle Controller - TSC1-VE Active

Issue description

CAN bus communication error indicating that the engine's control module has stopped receiving the Torque Speed Control (TSC1) command messages from the main vehicle controller over the machine's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring and connectors between the Engine ECU and the Vehicle Control Module (VCM). Verify that all connector locks are intact, not broken, and securely hold the connectors in a locked position.

  2. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to perform a CAN Network Test to check the overall health of the CAN network and verify if the Vehicle Controller is communicating with other modules.

  3. Turn the ignition switch OFF, disconnect the modules on the affected CAN bus, and measure the resistance through the CAN bus circuit (across CAN High and CAN Low pins) to check for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.

  4. If the fault code is currently inactive, wiggle the wiring harnesses near the ECU and VCM to check for an intermittent connection or loose pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the battery before performing electrical repairs.

  2. Repair Wiring/Connectors

    If damaged wiring or broken connector locks were found during the visual inspection, repair the damaged wiring or replace the connector housings. Retest the circuit.

  3. Bypass Test

    If the wiring appears visually intact but communication is still failing, temporarily run a bypass/jumper wire for the CAN bus circuit between the ECU and the Vehicle Controller. Retest the machine. If the fault code clears, replace the affected section of the wiring harness.

  4. Software Update

    If the wiring is completely intact and the code persists, check for available software updates for the Engine ECU. Service manuals note that updating ECU software can resolve certain CAN timeout anomalies.

  5. Module Replacement

    If the harness is good and software is up to date, the Engine Controller or Vehicle Controller has suffered a hardware failure on its CAN transceiver and must be replaced.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect all components, turn the key ON, and use the EST to clear the fault codes. Run the machine to confirm the elimination of the fault.
