Case IH 3340 – Engine Controller (ENG / Engine ECU / ECM): Timeout of CAN Message Time Date
Issue description
Communication error on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus where the control module is failing to receive the expected data packet containing the time and date from the master controller within the required timeframe.

Check the cause
Perform a system-wide scan using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check if other modules are also missing CAN messages
Perform a CAN bus resistance test by disconnecting the battery and measuring resistance across CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port (should read approximately 60 ohms)
Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the cab controller for chafing, pinched wires, or moisture intrusion at the connectors
Verify proper voltage and a clean ground for the module responsible for sending the time/date message
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the key and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage while testing.
Locate the Break/Short
If the resistance test failed, trace the CAN bus wiring harness from the Engine ECU toward the cab. Pay special attention to pivot points, areas near the engine block (heat damage), and bulkheads.
Repair Wiring / Connectors
If a broken wire, corroded pin, or pushed-out connector is found, repair the harness using OEM-approved weather-pack connectors and wiring.
Check/Replace Terminating Resistors
If the bus measures 120 ohms, locate the terminating resistors (often integrated into the ECU, the display, or plugged into the ends of the harness). Replace the faulty resistor if it is a standalone harness component.
Module Replacement (Last Resort)
If the wiring, grounds, and resistors all test perfectly, the Engine ECU or the Cab Display/Controller has an internal CAN transceiver failure. Replace the faulty module.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the CNH EST diagnostic software to clear the inactive 3340 fault code. Run the machine to verify the code does not return.
