Case IH 3341 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Timeout of CAN Message HRVD (High Resolution Vehicle Distance)
Issue description
The HRVD message is a standard J1939 CAN bus message (PGN 65217) that broadcasts the vehicle's accumulated distance (odometer and trip distance). A "timeout" condition means that the control module expecting this data has stopped receiving the message over the CAN network within the expected timeframe. This is a communication error, not a mechanical failure, typically pointing to a wiring issue, a failed module, or a missing terminating resistor.

Check the cause
Verify vehicle configuration: Check if the tractor is actually equipped with a tachograph or specific instrument cluster meant to broadcast the HRVD message.
Check for accompanying codes: Look for other CAN timeout codes (e.g., ETC1, TCO1, AMCONIv). Multiple timeout codes indicate a broader CAN bus failure.
Measure CAN Bus resistance: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN-H and CAN-L pins. It should read approximately 60 ohms.
Check CAN voltages: With the key on, verify voltage on the CAN lines (typically ~2.5-2.7V on CAN-H and ~2.3-2.5V on CAN-L).
Inspect the broadcasting module: Verify that the Instrument Cluster (or Tachograph) is powered up, grounded properly, and functioning correctly.
Repair steps
Connect EST
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to read all active and stored fault codes to confirm 3341 is active.
Inspect wiring harness
Disconnect the battery and inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Instrument Cluster/Tachograph. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.
Test CAN bus resistance
Perform the 60-ohm CAN bus resistance test.
Repair wiring or replace resistor
If the resistance is 120 ohms or open, locate and repair the damaged wiring, reconnect the open connector, or replace the missing/failed CAN terminating resistor.
Clean connectors
Clean and secure all connectors at the Engine ECU and the Instrument Cluster.
Replace broadcasting module
If the wiring and terminating resistors are perfectly intact, the module responsible for broadcasting the HRVD message (usually the Instrument Cluster) has likely suffered an internal CAN transceiver failure and must be replaced.
Clear codes and test drive
Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the EST, and test drive the tractor to verify the HRVD message is being received and the code does not return.
