Case IH 3353 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine compression brake low side driver circuit short to ground failure

Issue description

The control module has detected that the ground-side (low side) of the electrical circuit controlling the engine compression brake solenoid is shorted directly to the chassis ground. Because the circuit is shorted, the module cannot properly command or modulate the compression brake actuator, which will likely result in the engine compression brake failing to engage or operating erratically.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the engine wiring harness routed between the Engine ECU and the engine compression brake solenoid for rubbed-through insulation, melted wires, or pinch points against the engine block or brackets.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the compression brake solenoid and at the ECU. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or bent terminals that could be bridging to ground.

  3. With both ends of the circuit disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the resistance between the low-side driver wire and a known good chassis ground. Near zero ohms indicates the wiring harness is shorted to ground.

  4. If the wiring harness tests open (no short), test the compression brake solenoid itself for an internal short to its own casing/ground.

  5. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the status of DTC 77F3 to see if the fault is currently active or stored, helping identify intermittent wiring shorts.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during repairs.

  2. Isolate the Fault

    Based on your multimeter tests, determine if the short is in the wiring harness or internal to the solenoid.

  3. Repair the Harness

    If the short to ground is located in the wiring harness, open the wire loom at the site of the damage. Repair the wire using OEM-approved environmental splices and heat shrink, or replace that section of the engine harness. Secure the harness away from high-heat or high-vibration areas to prevent recurrence.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

    If the harness is intact and the solenoid is internally shorted, remove the defective engine compression brake solenoid valve and install a new one. Torque the retaining bolts to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassemble and Restore Power

    Reconnect all electrical connectors and reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Connect the Case IH EST, clear the inactive DTC 77F3 (3353) code, and run the engine. Command the engine compression brake to verify proper operation and ensure the code does not return.
