Case IH 3358 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): CAN Transmit Timeout

Communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus where the control module fails to transmit its required data packets within the expected timeframe.

   Measure the resistance across the CAN bus network (should read 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a missing terminating resistor or damaged wiring; open indicates a disconnected connector or severed wire)

   Inspect the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the Engine ECM and the rest of the tractor's network for chafing, shorts to ground, or shorts to power

   Inspect the Engine ECM harness connectors for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins

   Verify that the Engine ECM is receiving proper battery voltage and has a clean, tight ground connection

   Repair Wiring

   If the CAN bus reading is open, trace the harness from the ECM to the main chassis harness. Locate and repair the damaged wiring or reconnect the open connector.

   Replace Terminating Resistor

   If the CAN bus reads 120 ohms, locate the faulty or missing 120-ohm terminating resistor on the network and replace it.

   ECM Replacement

   If the wiring harness is intact, terminating resistors are functioning, and the ECM has verified power/ground but still fails to transmit on the CAN bus, the Engine ECM has suffered an internal hardware failure. Replace the Engine ECM.

   Reprogramming

   If the ECM is replaced, the new module must be flashed/programmed with the specific software for your tractor's serial number using the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool).
