Case IH 3359 – Engine ECU: TSC Demand Physically Implausible
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) receives torque and speed demand commands from the main vehicle controller (or transmission controller) via the CAN bus network. This code triggers when the requested torque or speed value received by the engine controller falls outside of physically possible bounds, programmed limits, or expected operating parameters.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Case IH Magnum 235
- Case IH Magnum 260
- Case IH Magnum 290
- Case IH Magnum 315
- Case IH Magnum 340
- Case IH Steiger Series
Check the cause
Check for related codes: Look for active CAN bus communication errors (such as code 3358 'CAN Transmit Timeout') or foot pedal sensor codes (3364/3365) which might be corrupting the torque demand signal.
Monitor live data: Use the diagnostic tool to monitor the 'TSC Demand' data PID while operating the tractor. Look for erratic spikes or frozen data values coming from the vehicle controller.
Inspect the CAN bus network: Check the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECU and the main Vehicle Control Module (VCM) for corrosion, moisture, backed-out pins, or chafing.
Check software revisions: Verify the current software versions on both the Engine ECU and the Vehicle Controller. Software mismatches or outdated firmware are the most common causes of plausibility faults.
Repair steps
Clear and Retest
Clear the fault code using the diagnostic tool. Operate the machine under load to see if the code returns. If it was a momentary CAN bus glitch, it may not return.
Harness Repair
If physical inspection reveals damaged CAN wiring (twisted pair wires) between the cab and the engine, repair the wiring using OEM-approved splice methods and clean the connector pins with contact cleaner.
Software Update
Connect the CNH EST and flash the Engine ECU and the Vehicle Controller with the latest OEM software calibrations. Manufacturers frequently release software patches to widen the plausibility parameters and prevent false 3359 codes.
Recalibration
After updating the software, perform a transmission and engine throttle recalibration as prompted by the service tool to ensure both modules are synced.
