Case IH 3360 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Driving Dynamic Control - Not Plausible
Issue description
The Engine Control Module is receiving vehicle dynamic data over the CAN bus (such as wheel speed, transmission output speed, or torque demand) that contradicts other sensor inputs (like engine speed, throttle position, or load). The physical behavior of the tractor does not match the expected mathematical model programmed into the controller.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Case IH Magnum 235
- Case IH Magnum 260
- Case IH Magnum 290
- Case IH Magnum 315
- Case IH Magnum 340 (Series 4)
- Case IH Steiger series
Check the cause
Check for companion codes using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST), specifically looking for wheel speed sensor faults, transmission speed sensor faults, or CAN bus communication timeouts
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the Engine ECM, the Transmission Control Unit (TCU), and the Armrest controller for chafing, corrosion, or loose connector pins
Monitor live data for wheel speed, radar speed (if equipped), and transmission output speed while driving to identify erratic drop-outs or spikes
Verify if there is a software update available for the Engine ECM or Vehicle Control Unit, as plausibility parameters are sometimes overly sensitive in older software versions
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port.
Address Primary Faults
If a specific speed sensor or CAN timeout code is present alongside 3360, diagnose and repair that specific circuit first. Code 3360 is often a secondary symptom of a failing speed sensor.
Harness Repair
If live data shows erratic speed signals but the sensor tests good, back-probe the sensor connector and the ECM connector to check for high resistance. Repair any damaged wiring or replace corroded connector pins using a dielectric grease to prevent moisture intrusion.
Sensor Replacement
If a wheel speed sensor or transmission speed sensor is found to have an internal open/short circuit or is physically damaged by debris, replace the sensor.
Clear and Test
Clear the fault codes using the EST. Perform a test drive under varying loads and speeds to ensure the ECM registers plausible dynamic data and the code does not return.
Parts you might need
(3)Wheel Speed Sensor / Transmission Speed Sensor
OEM CNH. Fitment depends on specific Magnum/Steiger axle configuration.
CAN Bus Wiring Harness Repair Kit / Pigtail Connectors
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Only replace if the module fails internal logic tests and refuses software flashing (highly unlikely for this specific code).
