3361 (DTC E16D) - ECU

Case IH 3361 (DTC E16D) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECM EEPROM - General Error

Issue description

This fault code indicates an internal hardware monitoring failure within the control module. Specifically, the module has detected an error during a read or write access operation to its internal EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory).

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., 235, 250, 280, 310, 340, 370, 380 - Series 4 / Tier 3 / Tier 4a / Tier 4b)
  • Case IH Steiger & Quadtrac Series
  • Case IH Puma & Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines
  • Case Construction Equipment (e.g., 580N, 580SN, 590SN Super N Tractor Loader Backhoes)

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the fault code is currently active or stored as an intermittent historical code.

  2. Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to record all fault codes, the number of occurrences, and the engine hours at the last occurrence prior to clearing.

  3. Clear the fault codes using the EST, cycle the ignition key off, wait for the ECU to power down completely, and turn the ignition back on. If the code resets immediately, the EEPROM failure is a hard fault.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness, battery connections, and ECU power/ground pins. Ensure there are no loose connections, voltage drops, or spikes that could have interrupted an EEPROM write cycle.

Repair steps

  1. Software Reload

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Attempt to update, re-flash, or reload the engine ECU software with the correct base-level software and dataset for the machine.

  2. Re-evaluate

After the software flash is complete, cycle the key and check if the 3361 fault code returns. If the error is resolved, the issue was a software corruption, and the machine can be returned to normal operation.

  3. ECU Replacement

If the error reoccurs after trying to reload the software, the EEPROM memory chip is physically defective. The Engine ECU cannot be repaired in the field and must be replaced.

  4. Initialization

Install the new Engine ECU. Use the EST to initialize the new controller, flash the correct software/dataset, and perform any necessary self-learning parameter calibrations (such as injector trim codes).
