Case IH 3368 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ENG): Info: Torque Limitation due to OBD Performance Limiter by Legislation
Issue description
Informational code indicating that the engine control system has actively placed the machine into a 'derate' mode, which limits fueling and reduces engine torque. This torque limitation is a legally mandated response triggered by another active engine or emissions-related fault. Symptoms include loss of power, difficulty starting, excessive smoke, or increased fuel consumption.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Farmall
- Steiger T4B
- Magnum series (235 - 340 Series 4)
- Steiger series (350, 400, 450, 500, 550, 600)
- Puma series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225)
- Quadtrac
- Rowtrac
Check the cause
Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool - EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.
Read all active and stored fault codes in the Engine ECU.
Look for the primary fault code that triggered the 3368 derate (typically an emissions-related code like DEF quality, SCR catalyst efficiency, NOx sensor faults, or a fuel injection system error).
Do not attempt to clear the 3368 code directly as your first step; it is an informational code that will remain active as long as the primary fault is present.
Repair steps
Identify primary fault
Identify the primary active fault code using the diagnostic tool.
Troubleshoot primary fault
Follow the OEM service manual troubleshooting steps for that specific primary fault code.
Repair primary fault
Repair or replace the failed component causing the primary fault (e.g., replace a faulty NOx sensor, clean a clogged DEF doser, or replenish contaminated DEF fluid).
Clear primary fault codes
Once the physical repair is complete, use the diagnostic tool to clear the primary fault codes.
Perform system test
Depending on the primary fault, you may need to perform a system test, a forced stationary regeneration, or run the engine under load at operating temperature to satisfy the ECU that the emissions system is functioning correctly.
Verify repair
Once the ECU verifies the primary system is repaired, the 3368 OBD Performance Limiter code will automatically clear, and full engine torque will be restored.
