3370

Case IH 3370 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Info: Torque Limitation due to Engine Protection (against Excessive Torque, Engine Over speed and Overheat)

Issue description

This is an informational 'derate' code indicating the engine controller has actively reduced engine torque (power) to protect the engine from catastrophic damage due to overheating, overspeeding, or excessive torque.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger / STX Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Farmall Series
  • Case IH Axial-Flow Combines

Check the cause

  1. Scan for root-cause codes using a diagnostic tool (look specifically for coolant temperature, engine speed, or turbo boost pressure codes)

  2. If overheating is suspected: Check the radiator and cooling package for external blockages caused by dust, chaff, or debris

  3. If overheating is suspected: Verify coolant levels, inspect the radiator cap for proper pressure retention, and check the water pump and fan drive belt tension

  4. If overspeed or excessive torque is suspected: Inspect the turbocharger wastegate or Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) actuator for sticking

  5. If overspeed or excessive torque is suspected: Check for intake leaks or restricted exhaust systems (such as a plugged DPF)

Repair steps

  1. Address Accompanying Codes First

If a sensor code (like coolant temp or engine speed) is present alongside 3370, replace the faulty sensor and inspect its wiring harness for shorts to ground or open circuits.

  2. Resolve Overheating

Blow out the radiator fins from the inside out using compressed air to remove chaff and dirt. If the coolant is old or contaminated, flush the cooling system and refill with OEM-approved coolant. Replace the thermostat if the engine is failing to regulate temperature under load.

  3. Resolve Overspeed/Airflow Issues

Clean or replace the turbo wastegate actuator if it is seized. Verify the engine speed (crankshaft/camshaft) sensors are securely mounted and free of metallic debris.

  4. Clear and Test

Once the mechanical or sensor issue is repaired, use your diagnostic scanner to clear the 3370 code (and any related codes). Perform a test run under heavy load to ensure operating temperatures remain normal and the torque limitation derate does not return.
