3371

Case IH 3371 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Temporary Torque Limitation Due To High Fuel Temperature. See Other Fault Codes

Issue description

This is an informational 'derate' code indicating that the engine control system has intentionally limited the engine's torque output and fuel injection volume to protect the fuel injection system and engine components from damage caused by excessively high fuel temperatures or related injection errors.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • SR175
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Magnum Series (235 - 340, Series 4)
  • Steiger Series (350 to 600 HP)
  • Puma Series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225)

Check the cause

  1. Connect diagnostic tool and check for primary fuel temperature sensor codes (e.g., 263, 265, 3015, 3016)

  2. Inspect the fuel temperature sensor and its wiring harness for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to battery

  3. Verify if the fuel is actually overheating by checking for a restricted fuel cooler, very low fuel levels, or a failing fuel pump

  4. Inspect fuel filters and lines for clogs that could cause the fuel system to overwork and generate excess heat

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Hook up the Case IH EST to the machine's diagnostic port to read all active and stored ECU codes.

  2. Address the Root Cause

If a fuel temperature sensor code (e.g., 263, 265) is present, test the sensor's resistance. If it is out of specification, replace the fuel temperature sensor. If the wiring harness is damaged, repair or replace the affected section of the harness. If the fuel is genuinely overheating, clean the exterior of the fuel cooler/radiator assembly to ensure proper airflow, and replace the fuel filters to remove any flow restrictions.

  3. Clear Codes

Once the physical repair is complete, use the EST or a CAN-Bus DTC Eraser to clear the error codes from the Engine ECU.

  4. Test Run

Operate the machine under load to ensure the fuel temperature remains within normal parameters and verify that the 3371 torque limitation code does not return.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Fuel Temperature Sensor

OEM Part Number depends on specific F5C/F5H or Magnum/Steiger engine application. Required if the sensor is internally shorted or reading out of range.

  • Fuel Filter Elements

Generic maintenance part. Required if fuel flow restriction is causing the fuel to overheat.

  • Wiring Harness / Pigtail Connector

Required if the connector at the fuel temperature sensor is melted, corroded, or damaged.
