3380

Case IH 3380 – Engine Control Unit (ENG / ECU): Engine Fan Increase Speed Error (open or short circuit)

Issue description

This code indicates a fault in the electrical circuit controlling the engine's cooling fan. Specifically, the system detects an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to power in the Vistronic engine cooling fan driver or fan control solenoid, preventing the engine controller from increasing the fan speed when cooling is demanded.

Applies to these machines

  • Case IH Magnum Series (235, 245, 275, 285, 290, 305, 340 - Series 4)
  • Case IH Steiger Series (400, 450)
  • Case IH Maxxum Series (125, 130, 145)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the fan clutch solenoid for chafed wires, melted insulation, or moisture inside the connectors.

  2. Ensure the fan clutch is fully plugged in, as a disconnected or loose harness will immediately trigger an open circuit code and usually cause the fan to default to running constantly at full speed.

  3. Unplug the fan harness directly at the fan clutch to perform a bypass test. A disconnected Vistronic fan should default to running at full speed. If it does, the mechanical portion of the clutch is likely fine, pointing to a wiring or solenoid failure.

  4. Use a multimeter to check for continuity in the fan control solenoid circuit and verify that the ECU is sending the correct voltage to the fan driver.

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or corroded connector pin in the fan harness, repair the wiring or replace the specific harness section (e.g., the Viscous Joint Fan Harness).

  2. Replace the Fan Clutch

If the wiring and ECU outputs test good, the internal solenoid of the Vistronic fan clutch has failed (open or shorted). The solenoid is typically integrated into the clutch, meaning the entire Vistronic fan clutch assembly must be replaced.

  3. Clear Codes

After replacing the harness or fan clutch, turn the key on and use the tractor's AFS Pro display or a diagnostic scan tool to clear the stored 3380 fault code.

  4. Test Operation

Start the tractor and bring it up to operating temperature to ensure the fan cycles on and off correctly without defaulting to a constant high speed.
