Case IH 3382 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): Fan Control Solenoid Short To 12Vr

Issue description

The control module has detected a short circuit to battery voltage (12V) on the driver circuit responsible for operating the hydraulic cooling fan control solenoid. This means the wire supplying the signal to the fan control solenoid is improperly receiving 12V power (likely due to a wiring harness short), or the solenoid itself has failed internally and shorted out.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the hydraulic fan control solenoid for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points where the signal wire might rub against a 12V power supply wire

  2. Perform a voltage check (wiring short cause): Disconnect the harness connector at the fan control solenoid, turn the key ON (engine off), and measure voltage on the signal wire. A 12V reading indicates a short to power in the harness

  3. Perform a solenoid resistance test (failed solenoid cause): Measure the resistance across the pins of the fan control solenoid. Extremely low resistance or continuity to the housing indicates the coil is internally shorted

  4. Inspect the ECU pins: Disconnect the engine ECU harness and check the pins for corrosion, water intrusion, or bent pins that could be bridging circuits

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the hydraulic fan control solenoid, which is typically mounted on the hydraulic fan drive pump or the fan control manifold block.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the harness, carefully open the wire loom, locate the shorted wires, splice in new wire if necessary, and seal the repair with marine-grade heat shrink tubing.

  4. Replace Solenoid (If Applicable)

    If the solenoid coil is internally shorted: Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut or bolt at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. Slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the stem and secure it with the retaining nut.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Plug the electrical connector back in, reconnect the battery, and use a CNH diagnostic tool (EASy) to clear the inactive fault codes.

  6. Test Operation

    Start the engine and bring it up to operating temperature to verify that the hydraulic fan engages properly and the 3382 code does not return.
