Case IH 3401 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) module: Lambda sensor : Lambda Sensor inner Resistance calibration value too Low

Issue description

The engine management system monitors the internal resistance of the Lambda (Oxygen/O2) sensor to ensure its internal heater and Nernst cell are operating at the correct temperature. A "too low" calibration value indicates that the sensor's internal resistance has dropped below the acceptable threshold, which is typically caused by a shorted internal heater circuit, a degraded sensor element, or a wiring fault.

  • Case IH and New Holland agricultural equipment (tractors and combines) equipped with Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) NEF engines utilizing Tier 3 and Tier 4a/4b EDC systems

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Lambda sensor and the Engine ECU for chafing, melting, or short circuits to ground.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and use a digital multimeter to measure the internal resistance of the sensor's heater circuit pins. Compare the reading to OEM specifications to confirm if the sensor itself has failed internally.

  3. Check for exhaust leaks upstream or immediately downstream of the sensor, which can skew temperature and resistance logic.

  4. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EASY tool) to check for related open-circuit or short-circuit codes (such as 3707 through 3713, which indicate specific Lambda sensor pin faults).

Repair steps

  1. Turn off machine and disconnect battery

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Allow exhaust to cool

    Allow the exhaust system to cool completely.

  3. Locate Lambda sensor

    Locate the Lambda sensor on the exhaust system (typically mounted on the exhaust pipe near the turbocharger or aftertreatment/EGR assembly).

  4. Disconnect electrical connector

    Disconnect the Lambda sensor's electrical connector from the engine wiring harness.

  5. Remove Lambda sensor

    Using a 22mm Lambda sensor socket, carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe. If it is seized, apply penetrating oil and allow it to soak before attempting removal.

  6. Inspect and clean threads

    Inspect the mounting bung threads in the exhaust pipe and clean them if necessary.

  7. Apply anti-seize compound

    Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new Lambda sensor (avoid getting any on the sensor tip). Note: Premium replacement sensors often come with anti-seize pre-applied.

  8. Install new sensor

    Thread the new sensor in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  9. Reconnect electrical connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks into place securely. Route the wire away from extreme heat sources.

  10. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  11. Clear fault code and reset adaptations

    Connect the CNH diagnostic tool to clear fault code 3401 and reset the Lambda sensor adaptations/calibration values in the ECU.
