3405

Case IH 3405 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: ECU Power stages: Open load temperature error on the Turbocharger PWM output power stage.

Issue description

The engine control module has detected an open circuit (open load) or an over-temperature condition on the Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) output circuit that controls the turbocharger wastegate actuator.

Applies to these machines

  • Farmall
  • skid steer
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Axial-Flow
  • 7230
  • 8230
  • 9230
  • 2388
  • SR series
  • SV series
  • TR series
  • TV series
  • SR175

Check the cause

  1. Monitor the fault to see if it clears itself, as it may be a transient temperature spike or temporary open load

  2. Check the Engine Controller Waste Gate Turbocharger Actuator Red Circuit for an open load

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the EDC and the turbocharger wastegate actuator for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins

  4. Verify the EDC condition, as it may need replacement if the fault persists after wiring and actuator checks

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and let the engine and turbocharger cool completely before starting work.

  2. Inspect Wiring

Trace the wiring harness from the turbocharger wastegate actuator back to the EDC. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or disconnected plugs.

  3. Test the Actuator Circuit

Use a multimeter to check for continuity and verify there is no open circuit in the PWM wiring.

  4. Replace the Actuator (if faulty)

If the wiring is intact but the actuator fails electrical testing (or is mechanically seized/burnt out), replace the turbocharger wastegate actuator assembly.

  5. Replace the EDC (if necessary)

If the wiring and actuator are both in good working order but the open load/temperature error persists, the output power stage inside the EDC has failed. You will need to replace and program a new EDC.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect all components, power on the machine, and clear the fault codes to verify the repair.
